Improving the security and safety of your computer system

The security and safety of your business systems is a boring topic – until something goes wrong.

Here are a few simple tips:

Don’t allow staff to share login names and passwords;
Use an integrated security system so that, as far as possible, when you change one password, the other systems are updated;
Use a Grandfather/ father / son rotating backup system – ask for a copy of our booklet and coloured stickers to keep your tapes organised and systematic;
Ensure that tapes are taken off site every night;
Firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware – these services should be managed on a subscription basis so that your system is automatically updated whenever a new risk arises;
Make sure you have “ghost” CDs for all your computers. That way, if something major goes wrong, you can re-instate the system quickly;
Make sure your physical environment is safe. Are your servers at the back of the office in a secure area, away from burglars or where water may enter in a downpour? Are your computers, hubs and devices stored in secure area where they will not fall, be tripped over or where you can bang your head on them.
